In this city, Indonesia proclaimed its independence on 17 August 1945. Jakarta which was called Sunda Kelapa, then Jayakarta the Nation's capital, dates its founding back to 1527, its name was later changed to Batavia under the Dutch.
The National Monument or "Monas" as it's popularly called, is a 137-meters tall obelisk topped with a flame coated with 35 kg’s gold which symbolizes Indonesians efforts in the proclamation of independence in August 1945.
Beside the monument, there are many interesting places including outstanding museums, "Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature Park" (Taman Mini Indonesia Indah), and Jaya Ancol Dream land.
